Under these conditions, it is necessary to build the planning scale in such a way that the team has a clear idea of what to expect and when. After witnessing several meeting accidents with a team I had worked with, we decided to create a „There is a time and a place for everything“ clause. As many people as I have to thank for helping me on this journey, I would like to start by thanking the teams that have really grown through this process. Without them, I would not have been able to understand the power of work agreements and that it is more about the journey of self-discovery than the construction of words. I would especially like to thank Kelli Derum, the PO for the team. A few years later, I turned to her and she was always as eager as ever to help. I particularly enjoyed the discussions we had and the time she spent, since she had just had a baby! I also appreciated the open feedback she shared, which I recorded with minimal editing. A work agreement is a short set of guidelines developed by the team for the team and set out the team`s expectations.
A well-written agreement should help establish a clear and common understanding among all team members of what they recognize as good behavior and communication. It is usually referred to as a single „working agreement“, but in reality it consists of many individual agreements for each topic or problem. With a new sense of camaraderie, I thought it might be a good time to redo these observations and get feedback. Once again, silence reigned in the teams.
